Naturopathy - means to an end

"I have tried going to gymnasiums, dieting, walking and aerobics to lose weight, although I lost some weight I cannot maintain it," says Aashima Singh.

It was at this time that she realised that however modern and advanced we get in the fields of science and technology we will not be able to find an unblemished healing system and the same applies for curing diseases with medicines. But later she resorted to something new — a growing concept in use — Naturopathy.

It is a drugless healing system, which aims at curing the disease from its root. "One of its main advantages is that, it expels toxins from the body and purifies the system completely," explains Dr Uday Chotai, a natural hygienist.

There are various health centres all over India that delve into this process. Bangalore has the biggest and the most famous 'Jindal's Farm', followed by 'Just for Health' at Lonavala and 'Shanku's Natural Health Centre' on the Meswan — Ahemdabad highway, Gujarat. These health resorts are attracting not only NRIs and foreigners but also Mumbaikars who are visiting these places in order to cure problems like diabetes, blood pressure etc.

The process and therapies

"The objective is to cure the people without using any kind of a medicine. Understanding the various human bodies is our priority and challenge," says Dr Chirag Andhariya, a Naturotherapist at 'Shanku's Natural Health Centre.'

When the patient is admitted to the centre, the patient's body is detoxified by providing him with healthy natural food. This increases the vitality force of the person and helps cure him of his problem effectively. Then according to the case history and medical record of the person, a suitable treatment is planned. "We also provide our patients with a daily schedule which consists of therapy, yoga, food and rest timings," says Dr Chotai, who manages the 'Just for health' sanatorium at Lonavala.

Each health centre using Naturopathy offers facilities like Aqua therapy, Mud therapies, Colon Hydro therapy, Acupunture, Jaccuzi, steam and Hydrojects. Some Health centres like the Jindal Farm have a different kind of therapy called the Magnetic therapy.

During their stay, people are kept on a healthy diet which consists of fruits, low fat food and lots of water. These centres also have health shops where people can buy Aloe Vera gels, Medicated soaps, Organic foodstuff etc. On completion of the patient's stay at the resort, the doctor provides the patient with a diet chart. However, it is up to the patient to actually follow it.

Is it effective?

"I have come all the way from London to seek naturopathy and I am sincerely recommending this to everyone," says KunwalKant Gunjal, who has travelled all over India in search of a holistic way to cleanse his body. "Naturopathy is the best cure to illnesses and my parents too are getting treated of their medical problems here," explains Gunjal, who is currently staying at the 'Just for Health' sanatorium. Jiyo Lalwani, who suffers from diabetes, has been managing to follow the daily schedule given to him since two years which has considerably reduced his diabetes.

"Being a college student, it was a bit difficult to adjust to their food plan. Beginning with fruits only, my body gradually adapted itself to the provided diet plan. I truly enjoyed practising yoga, the hour long walks and the optional cardio exercises. As a result, I managed to lose three kgs in a span of 10 days and that too without any side-effects," says Dimple Lalwani, a college student

Doctors and therapists prefer having such centres away from the hustle bustle and polluted environment of the city. It is because of this that Mumbai hasn't yet formed such an effective Naturopathy centre. Whether the health centres are effective or not, they sure do give people a chance to pamper themselves and prove to be a good holiday spot!
